Scammers are increasingly creative and aggressive in their tactics. Remember, Bluebonnet will never call you asking for money immediately.

Be aware of scam attempts

Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative members have reported a recent increase in attempted scams. During summer months, when electricity demand and usage is at its highest, scammers take advantage of members with fraudulent activities. These include posing as Bluebonnet representatives both over the phone and in person, making false claims about account issues or high billing errors, and claiming to sell solar energy systems. They often ask for immediate payment or even threaten to disconnect power if you do not comply. 

How Bluebonnet communicates about payments

Bluebonnet ensures members are notified about late payments through multiple channels prior to disconnect:

  1.  A reminder by mail
  2.  A courtesy call from our automated phone system
  3.  An email (if updated contact information is available)

If you haven't received these notifications and someone demands immediate payment over the phone or in person, do not pay. Do not disclose personal, Bluebonnet or bank account or credit card information.

Other reported scams

Along with fraudulent bill pay calls, we receive reports of other ways scammers try to defraud Bluebonnet members: 

  • Solar and renewable energy sellers who say they work for Bluebonnet. Bluebonnet does not employ or contract any company or individuals to install solar panels or any other type of renewable energy source at your home or office. We often work with solar and renewable energy companies, but they are hired by the homeowner or business and work for them, not Bluebonnet. Additionally, we do not go door-to-door selling anything.
  • Callers promising a zero-balance bill if you purchase their service or product. Solar or renewable energy representatives may claim that if you invest in their solar panels, you will no longer have an electric bill. This is not true.
  • Attempts at home robbery by people claiming to represent the utility. Be aware of people who come to your home claiming to represent Bluebonnet, or any other service provider. Bluebonnet employees carry photo identification badges, travel in company vehicles with logos on them and wear shirts with Bluebonnet’s logo. Bluebonnet contractors may contact members in person or leave a card at their door. Automated calls notify Bluebonnet members in advance of in-person visits. Ensure a request of entry is legitimate by calling Bluebonnet at 800-842-7708. 
  • A caller saying there is a merger with a neighboring utility, asking members to pay a new deposit. Bluebonnet has not merged with any other utility or company, and will not merge with any other cooperatives or companies that provide electric services.

Report any potential scam attempts to Bluebonnet at 800-842-7708 and your local law enforcement agencies. 

  • Company vehicles: Bluebonnet representatives travel in vehicles clearly marked with the Bluebonnet logo.
  • Uniforms: Bluebonnet employees wear uniforms with the Bluebonnet logo and contractors wear a shirt displaying their logo.
  • Notifications: Members are notified about their account through phone, mail and email. Bluebonnet also attempts to notify members of planned work by text message from 85700 or an automated call.

Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative will never:

  • Threaten to disconnect services if you do not make an immediate payment
  • Ask you to pay with a prepaid card or demand a cash payment
  • Call you from an out-of-state number
  • Instruct you to call a number that is not Bluebonnet's
  • Sell you products or services by phone or door-to-door

If you believe you have been contacted by a scammer, please immediately call a member service representative at 800-842-7708 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also, please call the non-emergency phone number for your local law enforcement agencies.

Tips to protect yourself

When power outages occur, it is not always possible for Bluebonnet to notify members of the need to access their property. It is important to remain vigilant and informed of new and evolving scams. Follow these tips to protect yourself and your personal information:

  1. Take your time: Scammers often create urgency to rush you into sharing personal information. Always pause and carefully consider any requests before acting or giving out information.
  2. Be suspicious: Scammers might insist on immediate payments via prepaid debit cards or unfamiliar apps. These requests are not standard practice and should raise red flags. Trust your instincts; if it seems unusual, it's likely a scam.
  3. Verify before you act: If contacted or approached by someone claiming to be from Bluebonnet and you're uncertain, call us directly at 800-842-7708. This ensures you're dealing with legitimate representatives and not falling victim to a scam.
