Solar FAQs
Bluebonnet does not install renewable energy resources such as solar arrays and batteries. We offer resources and information for you to get started on your solar journey, though.
We allow our members to choose any solar vendor they would like to use for their renewable energy installations. Because there are so many in our service area, with new vendors moving in often, we do not recommend specific vendors.
Most solar members can see a bill reduction of 30-70% depending on their system size, energy efficiency of their home and energy habits.
Depending on set up, a battery can be charged by the sun during the day and programmed to be the energy source when the sun is no longer available and further reduce consumption cost, once a battery is emptied the home will automatically pull from Bluebonnet's energy. You will need to discuss this option with your solar vendor to see if it is right for you.
Unless a solar system has battery backup storage, the home will lose power during an outage. Grid-tie only systems require power from the grid to work and go out when a line is down for lineman safety.
Bluebonnet does not provide a production meter, we have a dual register meter that works with the system and will track returned energy received from the solar and energy delivered from Bluebonnet to the home. Members can track this data using their MyBluebonnet account/app.
When a new or existing member takes over a location that already has solar on it they still have to complete our solar application paperwork. For better instruction, please reach out to a member service representative at 800-842-7708 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., letting them know you need to speak to someone in renewable energy or email us at renewables@bluebonnet.coop.
Yes, to remain in compliance with the Bluebonnet tariff, any changes to a member's solar system will need to be sent to Bluebonnet in a new application. Please have your solar vendor complete your application process. You can review the process here
